It\’s important to conserve water, not only because doing so will save you a lot of money in the long term, but also to do your part in preventing water shortages. This is especially true during the drought season in Georgia. Fortunately, there are a few simple things you can do to help conserve water that won\’t negatively impact your lawn. Here are some tips:

• Reassess your sprinkler system at the beginning of each season and adjust nozzles and controller times.
• Design sprinkler zones that apply even coverage to prevent over or under watering.
• Water to create a moist environment, not a wet one.
• Discourage weed growth and save water by using drip irrigation in flower beds and gardens.
• Aerate lawns annually to promote healthy, absorbent roots.
• Mulch flower and plant beds to retain water.
• Program your controller to frequent, short irrigation times rather than infrequent, long irrigation times to reduce run off and evaporation.
• Water in the early morning rather than the hottest part of the day.  Excess moisture and high temps create an environment for disease.
• Water slopes no more than 5-10 minutes at a time so as to reduce runoff and puddling.
