Winterize Your Irrigation System

The key to winterizing irrigation systems is letting the lines drain.  If water is left in the system over the winter,  the pipes can crack or break due to water expansion.  An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.  Winterizing now will save you time and money when it comes time to water again in the Spring.  Homeowners in Georgia can winterize their own systems by following the basic process of the manual drain method.

• First, locate the main water valve that supplies your system and turn it off.
• Second, run the controller through all of the zones.  This will run the water out of the pipes.
• Third, open each valve to release pressure from the pipes.
• Fourth, let the water drain.

Any above ground valves and pipes should be wrapped or taped.  Most irrigation systems are below ground so this will be an exception.
